Headshot Size and Resolution Guide for Every Platform
Why Size and Resolution Matter
Every platform has different requirements for profile photos. Upload an image that is too small and it looks pixelated. Too large and it may be cropped awkwardly or rejected. This guide covers the specifications for every major platform so you can get it right the first time.
- Recommended size: 400 × 400 px (minimum), up to 7680 × 4320 px
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 (square)
- File format: JPG, PNG or GIF
- Max file size: 8 MB
- Tip: Upload at least 800 × 800 px for a sharp display on retina screens
Google Workspace (Gmail, Meet)
- Recommended size: 250 × 250 px (minimum)
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 (displayed as a circle)
- Tip: Keep your face centred since the edges will be cropped into a circle
Zoom
- Recommended size: 150 × 150 px (minimum)
- Max file size: 2 MB
- Note: The photo is shown when your camera is off, so make it count
Microsoft Teams
- Recommended size: 648 × 648 px
- Aspect ratio: 1:1
- File format: JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP
- Max file size: 4 MB
Slack
- Recommended size: 512 × 512 px
- Aspect ratio: 1:1
- Max file size: 1 MB
MLS Real Estate Listings
- Common size: 300 × 300 px to 500 × 500 px (varies by MLS board)
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 or 2:3
- Tip: Check your local MLS board for exact requirements
GitHub
- Recommended size: 460 × 460 px
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 (displayed as a circle)
- Max file size: 1 MB
General Best Practices
- Always upload the largest version available — platforms downscale automatically
- Use JPG for photos (smaller file size) and PNG when you need transparency
- Keep your face in the centre third of the frame for circular crop safety
- Aim for at least 300 DPI for any photo that might be printed
